{"id":287,"date":"2012-08-10T12:21:50","date_gmt":"2012-08-10T17:21:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tslacconservation.wordpress.com\/?p=287"},"modified":"2018-06-21T15:08:34","modified_gmt":"2018-06-21T20:08:34","slug":"conservation-for-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/conservation\/2012\/08\/10\/conservation-for-exhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservation for Exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several items are in the lab this month in preparation for TSLAC\u2019s Civil War exhibit this fall.\u00a0 At many institutions, exhibit materials compose their own workflow for conservation.\u00a0 This month\u2019s items represent the strengthening integration of conservation\u00a0with our growing exhibits program here at TSLAC.<\/p>\n<p>Conservation work for exhibit usually combines item stabilization with aesthetic improvements and display planning.\u00a0 The goal is to have the item looking its best and displayed in a non-damaging way.\u00a0 Just what kind of work might this generate?\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you asked!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_288\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/blotter.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-288\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-288\" title=\"Military Board Blotter\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/blotter.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Military Board Blotter\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-288\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Military Board Blotter for exhibit, before treatment.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The loose paper covering on this 1860s military board blotter will be re-adhered to decrease the risk of further tearing and to improve the volume\u2019s aesthetics.\u00a0 The paper tabs at the book\u2019s head contain significant information; rather than being removed, they will be tucked down into the volume.\u00a0 Most importantly, the book\u2019s opening will be chosen from among the pages most relevant to the exhibit, with preservation in mind.\u00a0 The selected opening will create as little stress on the binding as possible over several months of display.\u00a0 The book will also be fitted with a cradle to further minimize stress at that opening.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_289\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/harpers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-289\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-289\" title=\"Harper's Weekly Engraving\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/harpers.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Harper's Weekly Engraving\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Harper&#8217;s Weekly<\/em> hand-colored engraving of the Battle of Galveston for exhibit, before treatment.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This 1863 hand-colored engraving from <em>Harper\u2019s Weekly<\/em> illustrates both the Battle of Galveston and the effects of tape repairs.\u00a0\u00a0Treatment will attempt to reduce the staining left behind by this previously applied tape.\u00a0 Stain reduction is a case-by-case\u00a0effort dependent upon many unknown variables, such as the materials in the paper, the materials in the tape\u2019s adhesive, and how those materials have aged and interacted in varying conditions over time.\u00a0 Here, the age and condition of these stains may limit\u00a0the treatment&#8217;s\u00a0effectiveness; the tape\u2019s plastic carrier and adhesive are long gone, leaving the stain to set for many years.\u00a0\u00a0Special care will also be taken\u00a0not to disturb the hand-coloring with solvents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_290\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/regimental-return.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290\" title=\"Regimental Return\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/regimental-return.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Regimental Return\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Regimental Return for exhibit, before treatment.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Several items, such as this 1862 regimental return document, simply require flattening and basic mends.\u00a0 This will improve exhibit appearance and also stabilize the documents to guard against further damage during handling and storage.\u00a0 There are many items in this condition at TSLAC and other libraries and archives.\u00a0 For them, exhibit serves as an additional selection method to bring them into the lab.<\/p>\n<p>You can see these items and others on display in TSLAC\u2019s lobby starting September 24.\u00a0 \u00a0Also unique to this exhibit will be a display devoted just to conservation \u2013 stay tuned for more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several items are in the lab this month in preparation for TSLAC\u2019s Civil War exhibit this fall.\u00a0 At many institutions, exhibit materials compose their own workflow for conservation.\u00a0 This month\u2019s items represent the strengthening integration of conservation\u00a0with our growing exhibits &hellip;
