Meusebach.\u00a0 This notebook is displayed along with several other Meusebach artifacts, including his famous 1847 Comanche peace treaty.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_411\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/2014-0510-00406.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-411\" class=\"size-large wp-image-411\" alt=\"Meusebach notebook before treatment\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/2014-0510-00406.jpg?w=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-411\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meusebach notebook before treatment<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Meusebach\u2019s notebook, just 5 \u00bd x 3 \u00be x \u00bd inches, features leather-trimmed, shaped wooden boards with a gold-tooled leather spine piece.\u00a0 Boards are hand-illustrated with German verse and drawings relevant to Texas.\u00a0 Gold-tooled leather loops at the boards\u2019 front edge hold a small pencil; when the pencil is inserted, the volume is fastened shut.\u00a0 Inside, the boards are lined with cream-colored silk.\u00a0 Silk pockets inside each board are further lined with bright, turquoise-colored paper.\u00a0 The notebook itself is separate from the boards, sewn into a flexible cover of cream-colored silk, turquoise paper, and gold foil decorative strips.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_412\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/2014-0510-00425.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-412\" class=\"size-large wp-image-412\" alt=\"Meusebach notebook components: case (boards), notebook, and stylus (pencil.)\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/2014-0510-00425.jpg?w=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"310\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meusebach notebook components: case (boards), notebook, and stylus (pencil.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The outer case had been previously repaired with pressure-sensitive tape along the inside and outside of its spine, with tape adhered to both leather and silk.\u00a0 During treatment, tape and adhesive were mechanically removed from the leather, revealing losses in the spine and the full detachment of the front board.\u00a0 Tape removal from the degraded silk was more problematic, especially because much of the silk was baggy and loose across the spine region.\u00a0 Working with a heated spatula allowed partial success.\u00a0 Toned Japanese tissue was then adhered to support and fill the remaining silk.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_413\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/2014-0510-00407.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-413\" class=\"size-large wp-image-413\" alt=\"Tape removal\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/2014-0510-00407.jpg?w=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tape removal<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The next step was to reattach the front board and fill the revealed spine losses with toned tissue.\u00a0 This step required some testing and adjustment of tissue placement and adhesives, since the small, ornately decorated notebook allowed very small adhesive surfaces.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_414\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/2014-0510-00414.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-414\" class=\"size-large wp-image-414\" alt=\"Notebook after treatment\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2014\/03\/2014-0510-00414.jpg?w=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Notebook after treatment<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You can see the resulting notebook on display in \u201cTexas Moves Toward Statehood: Stories Behind the Mural.\u201d\u00a0 The Texas State Library and Archives is now open on the second Saturday of every month from 9 AM to 4 PM.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In preparation for our exhibit, \u201cTexas Moves Toward Statehood: Stories Behind the Mural,\u201d TSLAC Conservation conducted treatment on a small notebook belonging to German immigrant and Fredericksburg founder John O.
