{"id":95,"date":"2011-05-13T16:30:37","date_gmt":"2011-05-13T21:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tslacconservation.wordpress.com\/?p=95"},"modified":"2018-06-21T15:08:41","modified_gmt":"2018-06-21T20:08:41","slug":"barn-floor-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/conservation\/2011\/05\/13\/barn-floor-paper\/","title":{"rendered":"Barn Floor Paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An ongoing project here at TSLAC is the treatment of our large collection of Confederate muster rolls.\u00a0 These documents provide a fascinating snapshot of men enlisting in the Confederate army, often stating their age, hometown, and personal supplies brought into service.\u00a0 The muster rolls come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, with myriad paper, media, and condition issues.\u00a0 Specifically, I\u2019ve noticed one unusual type of paper that composes perhaps 10% of the collection. \u00a0An example of this dark brown paper is below:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/dsc1294_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-96\" title=\"Muster roll, silked, before treatment.\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/dsc1294_web.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Muster roll, silked, before treatment.\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-96\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Muster roll, silked, before treatment. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>In my mind, I\u2019ve come to refer to this as \u201cbarn floor paper,\u201d because it would appear to be made from sweepings off the barn floor.\u00a0 Given the stresses and disruptions in manufacturing in the Confederacy, this isn\u2019t so difficult to imagine.\u00a0 A close-up may reveal more detail:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_97\" style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/dsc1295_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-97\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-97\" title=\"Muster roll, detail, during treatment.\" src=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/dsc1295_web.jpg?w=158\" alt=\"Muster roll, detail, during treatment.\" width=\"158\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-97\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Muster roll, detail, during treatment.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The paper is very coarse, with\u00a0a variety of\u00a0fibers visible throughout.\u00a0 It is poorly sized, if at all, which creates challenges in removing existing mends without disturbing the fibers.\u00a0 After treatment, wash water is a deep, molasses color, though the color of the paper itself remains quite dark.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<dl class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/tslacconservation.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/image001_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-98\" title=\"Muster roll, close-up on heading &quot;Pay Roll,&quot;
