Our Employees of the Quarter for the Fourth Quarter of Fiscal Year 2004

Richard Bickham - Richard Bickham began his work at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center in December 2002. In the position of Building Maintenance Worker, he maintains the grounds, repairs mechanical equipment, cleans the building, and even provides security on Saturdays. In addition to his set job responsibilities, Richard has used his own prior experience to perform routine plumbing and electrical repairs. In the past, local contractors or tradesmen have been hired to complete these repairs. With Richard completing them, time, money, and worry are saved. At the time of Peggy Rudd's last visit to the Sam Houston Center, Richard and, director, Robert Shaddt were changing the blades of the huge fan, a daunting job for the most seasoned professional. Richard not only does his job with accuracy and diligence, he works with pride, knowing that the work he does helps to create a positive experience for the visitors, patrons, and researchers of the Sam Houston Center. His performance is exceptional; he manages multiple assignments beautifully, and is quick to assist others to work as a team. TSLAC Chairman, Sandra J. Pickett has said, "Richard is an excellent employee and a fine, polite young man who always goes the extra mile in doing his job and in helping others to accomplish their tasks as well. Richard takes on any job he is given cheerfully and enthusiastically. He takes pride and initiative about improving the grounds and buildings at the Center. It makes me proud to show the public our lovely facilities and Richard is a big part of making sure everything looks its best."

Mike Avila - Mike Avila began his work with TSLAC in December 1992 as a librarian assistant in the Cataloging department. He moved to the Library Resource Sharing division in December 1995 and worked in the Texas Publications Clearinghouse for six years. During this time, he worked to distribute nearly a million and a half documents to depository libraries, completing his work with in a timely and accurate manner and taking on responsibilities far outreaching his job description.

In May 2001, Mike took on his current position of Public Information Specialist for LRS. At the time, the position was new to the division, so Mike had to develop it all himself by suggesting projects, establishing priorities, and developing cooperation and collaboration between other divisions. Examples of Mike's talent and dedication include:

- coordination of an annual informational packet for each of the over 700 TexShare libraries, working with each vendor to obtain materials and enhancing these with his own knowledge and materials.

- development and implementation of the Library of Texas Web presence

- creation and maintenance of the TexShare portion of the TSLAC press pass web page.

- maintenance of the TexShare Web site - a job previously contracted out to the University of Texas for thirty hours a week.

One coworker said this of Mike, "I know when I ask Mike to help me with a project I'll get quality work, without having to supervise him and it will be done on time and with a great attitude. You can't ask for a better colleague than that. From standing in the TSLAC booth at TLA for two or three days straight, talking, helping, and smiling with everyone who comes by, to creating html code, Mike is a great person to work with and a great employee of TSLAC."
