Previous Employees of the Quarter

Texas State Library and Archives Commission Employees of the Quarter are nominated by their TSLAC colleagues and are selected by the TSLAC Employee Recognition Committee. Employees of the Quarter are presented with a Certificate of Merit and eight hours administrative leave at the TSLAC Quarterly Awards Ceremony.

Our Employees of the Quarter for the Second Quarter of Fiscal Year 2009

JEREMIAH BAREFIELD – Jeremiah Barefield, Support Services Coordinator in Administrative Services, began work a little over a year ago and found himself immediately in the center of a maelstrom known as The Renovation of the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building.

In addition to his many regular duties, Jeremiah has been the go-to person for many renovation “activities” that have included coordinating moves of staff to other buildings and floors, surplusing furniture, dealing with expected and surprise power outages and fire alarms, elevator issues, bad smells, loud noises, delivery and parking issues and bathroom assignments to name a few. Jeremiah has handled them all with professionalism and efficiency.

Part of dealing with these many issues includes communicating with staff regularly on why something happened or informing staff to be prepared for a construction-related event. Fortunately, Jeremiah is an excellent communicator who has bridged the gap between the construction crews, the Texas Facilities Commission staff and our own library staff. Staff in every division know and appreciate Jeremiah. He has always shown great patience and professionalism in dealing with the many challenges and personalities.

When asked for solutions or help, he has never said “No” or “I can’t” and as a result, he is someone we have all come to count on and trust. We all know that no matter what happens, Jeremiah will take care of it. As evidence of his dependability and hard work, any time there is a question about a move or a building issue, one sentence can always be heard “Ask Jeremiah.”

Dawn Vogler photoDAWN VOGLER – When nominated for Employee of the Quarter several months ago, Dawn Vogler was working two jobs – her first job as Library Management Consultant and a second temporary assignment as Interim Manager of Continuing Education and Consulting in the Library Development division. No doubt the same qualities that prompted staff to nominate and support her for EOQ also put her over the top for the permanent position of Manager. Dawn didn’t just “fill the role” of Interim Manager, she “owned” it according to her colleagues.

Her work as CE and Consulting Manager was so outstanding, that the other LD program managers asked for an early, permanent promotion to that position for Dawn who is now the Manager of CE and Consulting. When Dawn assumed the temporary assignment, she immediately set about reviewing operations and procedures to improve workflow and communication, “plowing through obstacles and resistance,” according toa colleague who also said that Dawn is fair and willing todiscuss and resolve any difficult issues.

Smart, professional yet “lighthearted and fun,” Dawn is a strong communicator and leader and is always looking for ways to streamline and improve processes and performance in Continuing Education. Dawn also challenges those around her to work smarter and try new things. She encourages everyone to use the power of technology to do things differently and has taken the lead in developing new technologies for Library Development.

Dawn is also an excellent trainer and recently created “Early Literacy Kits on a Dime” for librarians who thoroughly enjoyed her workshop and were enthusiastic about using what Dawn had taught them. In typical fashion, Dawn made plans after the workshop to develop the training online.

Her work and her work ethic are strong evidence of her dedication and commitment to improving Texas libraries and to improving the Library Development division. “Dawn has brought a breath of fresh air into the whole department…She is doing more than just filling a role, she’s stepping up as a leader,” according to a colleague.
