Laura Norris and Jasper Winters
Our Employees of the Quarter for the 3nd Quarter of Fiscal Year 2016
Laura Norris, Reader’s Advisory Librarian, Talking Book Program
In less than two years with TSLAC, Laura Norris has made her mark as an intelligent, professional member of the Talking Book Program going well beyond the role of librarian to help TBP patrons. As a librarian, her rich knowledge of book genres, authors, and research capabilities makes her adept at helping our diverse patron population discover books on any subject. She is patient, compassionate, and friendly in her interactions with patrons, taking time to understand their interests and relentlessly researching all available avenues to find resources. Because she is an avid reader she empathizes with our patrons in their book quests as well as contributing her book knowledge to TBP’s collection development projects.
But Laura brings much more than her librarian skills to her work: she is a versatile, creative, energetic team player who tackles all challenges with good cheer, always motivated by the big picture of how to help TBP patrons. Whenever TBP needs someone to pitch in on a project, to staff a booth, write a blog or book review, organize meetings, create a PowerPoint, or update a bibliography, Laura dives right in with her positive and upbeat way. She has worked on numerous outreach activities including staffing the agency booth at TLA’s annual conference this year, braving the flood waters of Houston, where she worked long hours, enthusiastically extolling TBP virtues to thousands of librarians.
Jasper Winters, Inventory and Printing Coordinator, Administrative Services
No matter what the situation, problem, or issue, Jasper Winters is there to help or assist in any way he can in the Support Services section. His job is inventory, quick copy, mail, deliveries, receiving, and numerous other tasks, all vital behind-the-scenes services to the entire agency. Jasper has a tireless and “always on” work ethic, knows what is going on throughout the agency, and constantly is looking for ways to help and improve everyone’s work environment.
Universally liked and respected for his high performance level as well as his ever cheerful and upbeat personality, Jasper quickly responds to any request always meeting but usually beating deadlines. When his colleague in Support Services retired in January, Jasper was a Support Services section of one for several months, performing the section’s crucial duties singlehandedly. Simultaneously, Jasper dispatched a gargantuan quick copy workload in preparation for the annual TLA conference, three complicated commission meeting packets, and numerous Center for the Book print jobs, using his advanced Quick Copy skills.
When Daniel Shallue started in Support Services, Jasper stepped up and provided direction and mentoring to Daniel, as well as serving as an excellent role model.
Jasper clearly is a pillar of the agency and deserving of this his second EOQ award. His first was in 2007.
