The Texas Historical Records Advisory Board (THRAB) seeks submissions for its Archival Award of Excellence, an honor granted to archival institutions and individuals in Texas who have made significant achievements in preserving and improving access to historical records in any format.
THRAB is accepting nominations through September 15th, 2017 and will announce the recipients in October during Texas Archives Month. The award is funded by a 2017 State Programming Board grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) will receive a special legislative appropriation of one million dollars to bring high-speed internet connections to Texas communities via public libraries. The funds will allow TSLAC to facilitate local public library access to federal discounts that will make broadband connections affordable. The request was funded as part of the agency’s 2018-2019 legislative appropriation.
The Texas Center for the Book is seeking non-profit organizations that have made outstanding contributions to increasing literacy in Texas, qualifying organizations must be nominated by September 1, 2017.
The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has started renovation of the 1,900 square foot museum exhibit space at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center. Staff from the Center must carefully transport delicate historical artifacts and remove exhibit cases in preparation for the extensive remodeling project.
This April, Texans celebrate 21 years of Día de los Niño’s, Día de los Libros (Children’s Day, Book Day): a celebration of children, culture and literature. Texas Center for the Book coined the term Lone Star Día for Texas and encouraged statewide participation. Nationally, libraries, schools, churches and organizations are encouraged to discover “bookjoy” year-round and most events occur around Día’s birthday on April 30th.
Nine students have won the Texas round of the 2017 Letters About Literature Competition, sponsored in part by the Texas Center for the Book. This national reading and writing program, initiated by the Library of Congress, gives 4th-12th graders a chance to write to an author (living or deceased) about how his or her book has affected their lives. Nationally, close to 40,000 students wrote letters and since 1997 more than a million students have participated.
The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center, part of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, held an open house on Saturday, March 18, inviting area residents to donate items of historical importance to be included in the soon-to-be updated museum space detailing the narrative of the Atascosito District of Southeast Texas.
Over 2,200 Texas A&M University students answered the call to serve in World War 1, more than any other American college. To commemorate their service and honor the 55 fallen soldiers who did not return home, a flag was created. For many years the flag was displayed at the
Capitol and then preserved in the Texas State Archives.
