Austin, Texas    Texas Center for the Book/ZACH Theatre Celebrate Diversity in Literature with Special Performance   

 Join the Texas Center for the Book and Children’s Author Pat Mora at a special performance of Tomás and the Library Lady Saturday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. at ZACH Theatre to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Día – Children’s Day, Book Day. After the performance, attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the book, hear the author speak on literacy and enjoy refreshments.

The deadline for the Letters About Literature reading and writing contest for students in grades 4-12 is January 11, 2016. Entries for the nationwide literary competition, sponsored by the Texas Center for the Book, must be postmarked by January 11, 2016. Letters about Literature encourages young readers to read a book, poem or speech and write to the author (living or dead) to share how the book has affected them personally.

Drawing upon a wealth of previously untouched resources from the Texas State Archives, this book offers an engaging assessment of the much-reviled Texas State Police and its role in maintaining law and order in the years following the American Civil War.

Governor Greg Abbott today appointed Martha Wong of Houston, Romanita Matta-Barrera of San Antonio and re-appointed Larry Holt of College Station to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for terms to expire on September 28, 2021.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) and the Library of Congress announce the relocation of the Texas Center for the Book to its new home at the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building in Austin, Texas.

In October 2015, Texas will join archival repositories across the nation to celebrate Archives Month and promote the preservation of our country's documentary heritage. Archives Month in Texas aims to celebrate the value of Texas' historical records, to publicize the many ways these records enrich our lives, to recognize those who maintain our communities' historical records, and to increase public awareness of the importance of preserving historical treasures and making them available for use by present and future generations.

   Austin, Texas    Texas State Library and Archives Commission Receives 7.5M Increase in Funding   

 The 84th Texas Legislature has increased the appropriation of the State Library and Archives Commission by $7.6M for the 2016-2017 biennium. The new funding includes resources to launch the Texas Digital Archive to preserve and make available electronic archives of state government as well as $6M to offer Texans greater access to online information via the popular TexShare and TexQuest programs. The Texas State Library and Archives Commission also gained funds in the new state budget to address salary needs and to implement a new automated accounting and payroll system.

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission recently approved funding for 36 Texas libraries to address early learning priorities in their communities and ensure that all children enter school ready and able to learn through training provided by Family Place Libraries™. Expanding the traditional role of children's services, Family Place builds on the knowledge that good health, early learning, parental involvement and supportive communities play a critical role in young children's growth and development.

   Liberty, TX    Sam Houston Center to Briefly Close for Renovations   

Electrical repairs originally slated at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center for April 21-22 have been rescheduled for May 5-6, 2015. As a result, the Center will be closed both May 5th and 6th as staff continue to work to address critical safety and security needs within the Center’s buildings and grounds.
