Austin, TX    TSLAC Invites Poetry Fans to Hangout on Google Plus   

In a first for the agency, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) will broadcast a live video chat via Google+ Hangouts with State Librarian Mark Smith and seven guests. The public broadcast will take place online Thursday, April 17, 1-2pm CST.

   Austin, TX    Historic Violin to Be Displayed at UT-Austin’s Fine Arts Library   

For one night only TSLAC’s historic Journeay Violin will be on display in the Fine Arts Library at UT-Austin during a lecture on legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin. The lecture is free and open to the public and will take place at 5:30 p.m., Friday, February 28.

   Austin, TX    First Exhibit in 50 Years of Gov. John Connally’s Clothes Ends Next Friday   

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission invites the public to visit a free exhibit of unique documents and artifacts that capture the unforgettable events in Dallas November 22-24, 1963. The exhibit comes to a close Friday, February 14.

   Austin, TX    Texas Public Libraries Invited to Assess Digital and Technology Resources via Edge Initiative   

Last year the Texas State Library and Archives Commission joined the nationwide Edge Initiative, a management and leadership tool that looks at the digital and technology resources libraries provide to communities. Now public libraries in Texas are welcome to register for Edge at and gain access to technology assessment resources, including nationally recognized benchmarks, case studies, training, reporting tools, presentation tools and templates.

   Austin, TX    Sam Houston Center Improves Storage Conditions with Federal Funding   

The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center, part of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, is the recipient of a second National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Preservation Assistance Grant. The Center received a $6,000 NEH grant in 2013 to conduct the Center’s first general preservation assessment. The goals developed from the assessment are leading to continued grant funding and a variety of improvements at the Center.

   Austin, TX    Public Invited to Discuss Strategy and Direction of State Support for Texas Libraries   

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission, which provides support for 560 libraries statewide, invites the public to offer feedback to help the agency develop its strategic plan for 2015-2019.

State Librarian Mark Smith, who assumed leadership of the agency last November, aims to involve librarians, library patrons and supporters, community leaders and any other persons interested in helping the State Library plan its future.

   Austin, TX    TSLAC Will Receive Full Allotment of Federal Funds for Statewide Library Programs   

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) has successfully appealed a decision last September by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) that would have resulted in a loss of over $6.5 million in federal funds to support library services in Texas. As a result of the appeal, Texas will receive its full allotment of federal funds for statewide library programs.

   Austin, TX    Texas Library Users Can Now Access Rare Historical Materials via Statewide E-Content Program   

Texans can now access rare primary source materials related to the history of Native Americans and the West, including Texas. Two new databases of digital resources, American Indian Histories and Cultures and The American West, have been added to the statewide resource sharing program known as TexShare by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. Both new electronic resources expand the core menu of TexShare e-content available to Texans via their local libraries.

   Austin, TX    TSLAC Hosts Annual Fundraiser for Families in Need During the Christmas Season   

Three Austin-area families can look forward to a more bountiful Christmas this year. The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) will host its annual fundraiser for local families in need on Wednesday, December 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (The sale was originally scheduled for Friday, December 6, but due to inclement weather, it has been postponed to Wednesday.)
