The Conservation Intern conducts supervised conservation treatment of library and archival materials in the Texas State Library and Archives Commission’s Summerlee Conservation Lab.  Under close supervision of the Conservator, the intern will perform treatment activities including evaluating collections materials for treatment, recording treatment documentation, executing treatment, and constructing protective housings. The Conservation Intern also completes a preservation survey project focusing on scrapbooks or manuscripts.  This survey assists in prioritizing future preservation and conservation activities.  Other tasks may include environmental monitoring, exhibit preparation, and other preservation and conservation duties.  The stipend for this internship is $4,000.


Evaluate collections materials for treatment
Record treatment documentation in database system
Perform conservation treatment according to the Code of Ethics of the American Institute for Conservation
Construct protective housings within treatment parameters
Conduct preservation survey project
Present survey findings in written report and staff presentation


Assist in item evaluation meetings
Assist with exhibit preparation as needed
Assist with environmental monitoring as needed


Current student in or recent (within one year) graduate of a master’s degree-level conservation training program
Three months work or volunteer experience in book or paper conservation
Ability to compose concise, grammatically correct written communication/reports
Ability to exercise critical thinking, practical decision making, and time management within library and archives collections workflow.

Education/coursework in book or paper conservation techniques; library coursework
Experience in library and/or archives operations
Professional goals in library and/or archives conservation
Experience working independently, including conservation lab project planning and time management
Experience conducting a preservation survey with collections sampling techniques and presenting survey findings in a written report


Master’s-level college transcripts, letter of interest, resume, portfolio of conservation work (online portfolio accepted,) and contact information for two professional references must be submitted at the time of application
Criminal history check required upon contingent offer
Ability to lift 40 pounds of work-related materials and manipulate large volumes and boxes
Work in a non-smoking environment


This position does not have supervisory duties
