Applicant must submit an additional supplemental data sheet from the Texas State Library in order to be considered for the position.


The Research Assistant provides information and reference assistance to patrons by mail, telephone, on-site, or e-mail. In addition, the Assistant is responsible for enforcing security regulations, providing photocopies, and handling other duties as needed.


Provide information and reference assistance to patrons in the Archives Collection
Enforce Search Room security regulations
Attend work regularly and in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies
Comply with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety and standards of conduct


Retrieve and shelve agency holdings using a variety of location schemes and local archival classification systems
Provide formal tours; introductions to the collections and services; and oral presentations as needed
Assist in photocopying of archival materials as needed
Perform other duties as assigned


15 hrs College coursework including at least one class in American history and one year public service experience in a library or archive setting. High school diploma or GED equivalent and two years public service experience in a library or archive setting can substitute for college coursework
Six months work experience using a computer, including the use of basic office software
One year applicable work experience using the Internet

Ability to perform independently
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Ability to perform detailed work in a public area with many interruptions from patrons


Experience in an archive or manuscripts repository
Experience in a genealogy collection
Advanced college coursework in American or Texas history or government
Training in archival methodology
Experience making oral presentations to groups of varying size and ages


Must submit writing sample with application; sample should reflect professional business style and be no more than 500 words in length
Must pass in-basket exercise to be given during interview
Must pass criminal history check
Non-smoking work environment
May occasionally need to lift up to 40 lbs


Reports to the Assistant Director, Information Services
No supervisory responsibility
