New Texas Handgun Legislation and Libraries

image of holstered handgunGovernor Greg Abbott recently signed several changes to handgun carry legislation into law.  Since then, we have received a number of calls here at the State Library asking for information on the topic. We have put together information about those changes and what they mean for public libraries, and for campuses of higher education, that we hope many libraries will find helpful.

The information is in a handy, printable frequently asked questions format, and may be found here (PDF).

Remember,  this FAQ information represents only the Texas State Library and Archives Commission’s interpretation of Texas handgun-carry law and of the 84th Legislature’s changes to those laws, and is not intended to take the place of legal advice or counsel.  You should always consult with your own local legal counsel for interpretations of the law.  You may also contact the State Library with general library management and operations questions at, 512-463-5465, or 800-252-9386 (toll-free for Texas).
