by Bethany Wilson

Family Place LibrariesTM recognize the importance of early brain development and seek to create spaces in which physical, social, emotional, and cognitive learning can occur. They recognize parents and caregivers as first teachers and promote a national model for transforming public libraries into welcoming, developmentally appropriate early learning environments for young children, their parents, and caregivers. For more information about Family Place LibrariesTM, please visit their website at www.familyplacelibraries.org.

The Texas State Library & Archives Commission is happy to announce that the FY18 Family Place Libraries Notice of Funding Opportunity has been released! The Texas State Library and Archives Commission is looking for 12 qualified libraries to send to Family Place Training at the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach, New York.

The purpose of this grant is to create a welcoming, family-centered environment that empowers caregivers of young children as they become their child’s first teachers. This grant will provide funding for the equipment and training necessary for each library to:

  • Host workshops for children 0-3 and their caregivers.
  • Develop an interactive space for this age group to play and learn in the library.
  • Forge strong partnerships with community organizations serving young children and their families.

Applications will open on Monday, December 11th, 2018. In the meantime, please look over the Notice of Funding Opportunity for important information that will assist you in creating and submitting a successful application. You can access it here: https://tinyurl.com/y9rjmral

If chosen to participate in the 2018 cohort, libraries can expect to send two, full-time staff members to training either April 23-26 or May 7-10. Following training, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission will provide funding support in the amount of $6000 to participating libraries to buy supplies necessary to launch a successful Family Place LibraryTM location at their facility.
