Texas library staff, don’t miss this opportunity to get personalized help with crafting compelling messages about your library in a special two-part webinar series coming up on August 7 and 14, 2018. Some of you may remember writer/editor/marketer Kathy Dempsey from her Accidental Library Marketer book — others may remember the marketing webinars she provided for us a few years back. We are thrilled to have her present this very special two-part series for you. More details, including registration links for the two sessions, are posted below.

How to Craft Compelling Messages: Elevator Speeches, Soundbites, and More

[This two-part webinar series is limited to Texas library staff.]

When you have just a moment to make an important point, you must use it wisely. The trick to delivering an effective message is not simply thinking on your feet—it’s preparing ahead of time. Whether you need a media soundbite, a handy elevator speech, a go-to value statement, or lofty language for a stakeholder presentation, this strategy works.

During this duo of hands-on webinars, you’ll learn how to write and speak efficiently and effectively, so you’ll be ready for situations like these:

  • Someone asks, “Why do libraries still matter when everything is online?”
  • You need to convince a stakeholder or politician to increase funding.
  • People ask what you do besides read books and refill photocopy paper.
  • You need to talk with nonusers without becoming defensive.
  • A member of the media is going to interview you.

To ensure that each attendee develops this skill, the lesson will be split over two webinars. In the first, writer/editor/marketing maven Kathy Dempsey will teach tactics for effective communications, explaining strategies and including practice time. At the end, she’ll ask all participants to use offline time to write their own value statements and email them to her. Dempsey will evaluate each statement, then create the second webinar, in which she’ll show attendees’ statements along with her expert edits. This process will reinforce the lessons and demonstrate the process of perfecting the language.

Once you learn the strategy for assembling the right words, you’ll always be ready to deliver a compelling comeback, great quote, or effective message.
