What is Library Card Sign-up Month?
According to the American Library Association (ALA)’s website, Library Card Sign-up Month is “a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide join together to remind parents, caregivers and students that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.” For resources, ideas and information, check out ALA’s Library Card Sign-up Month website or the Press Kit website.
This year, ALA is using Disney Pixar’s The Incredibles as honorary chairs, reminding “families, students and people of all ages that signing up for a library card is a great step toward a truly super lifestyle: libraries offer fun and informative resources to help you pursue your passions and succeed in school.”
What are libraries doing to celebrate the month?
Libraries across Texas are participating in Library Card Sign-up Month! Here are just two great examples of Texas libraries getting the word out about the value of library cards:

They are also hosting a social media contest called “Get Carded” encouraging patrons to share creative pictures on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #NBPLGetCarded.
- The Tom Green County Library System – The Tom Green County Library System recently highlighted the value of a library card and the library’s resources in a local news outlet.
