Upcoming Webinar: Strategic Planning When You Can’t Afford A Consultant

2018 October 18
by Kyla Hunt

Next week I will be facilitating the webinar “Strategic Planning When You Can’t Afford A Consultant” presented by Michele Stricker, Deputy State Librarian of Lifelong Learning at the New Jersey State Library. Strategic planning is always a popular topic, and one that we receive many questions about. To coincide with the upcoming webinar, we wanted to share additional strategic planning resources.

Webinar Information

Your library has a mission to effectively serve the community. This cannot be achieved without a strategic plan that outlines your goals, priorities, resources, strengths and weaknesses. How can this be accomplished without the funding to hire an outside facilitator or consultant? This presentation will give you guidance on how research and write a strategic plan in-house. You will learn the major components of a strategic plan, how to conduct community research that will be incorporated into the planning process, and how to organize and delegate tasks.

If you would like to register for the live event, happening on Oct. 23, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. CDT, please visit the registration page.

Library Science Collection Resources

Email requests to borrow these titles from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission’s Library Science Collection to lsc@tsl.texas.gov.  The borrowing process is very easy, and there is not an item limit, so don’t be shy about requesting any titles which seem promising.

Recommended Titles: Strategic Planning for Libraries

  • Crash Course in Strategic Planning (2013) by Stephen A. Matthews and Kimberly D. Matthews – This book provides a clear overview on strategic planning, and might be a good place to start.
  • Strategic Planning for Results (2008) Author: Sandra Nelson for the Public Library Association – Considered by many to be a classic in the field, this work contains questions and forms to determine the goals of your library services.

Additional Resources

Archived webinar: How to Listen to Your Community 1: Using Surveys to Gather Data for Needs Assessment and Advocacy (2015) – This webinar discusses using data for strategic planning.

Archived webinar: How to Write Survey Questions to Get Useful Data (2018) – This archived webinar explores writing effective survey questions to obtain feedback from your community, and is a good companion to “How to Listen to Your Community.”

Edge toolkit – The toolkit is based on a national set of benchmarks for public libraries to evaluate their public technology services, and includes resources, recommendations, and tools for strategic planning and community engagement.
