Next week I will be facilitating the webinar “Strategic Planning When You Can’t Afford A Consultant” presented by Michele Stricker, Deputy State Librarian of Lifelong Learning at the New Jersey State Library. Strategic planning is always a popular topic, and one that we receive many questions about. To coincide with the upcoming webinar, we wanted to share additional strategic planning resources.

Your library has a mission to effectively serve the community. This cannot be achieved without a strategic plan that outlines your goals, priorities, resources, strengths and weaknesses. How can this be accomplished without the funding to hire an outside facilitator or consultant? This presentation will give you guidance on how research and write a strategic plan in-house. You will learn the major components of a strategic plan, how to conduct community research that will be incorporated into the planning process, and how to organize and delegate tasks.

Recommended Titles: Strategic Planning for Libraries

  • Crash Course in Strategic Planning (2013) by Stephen A. Matthews and Kimberly D. Matthews – This book provides a clear overview on strategic planning, and might be a good place to start.
  • Strategic Planning for Results (2008) Author: Sandra Nelson for the Public Library Association – Considered by many to be a classic in the field, this work contains questions and forms to determine the goals of your library services.
