2019 Summer Reading Program Materials are On the Way!

2018 October 24
by Bethany Wilson

The 2019 CSLP Summer Reading manuals and catalogs are headed your way! I’m happy to announce that we finished packing up your materials and mailed them to you this week. Every main and branch library in Texas will receive a packet with a single USB drive and a 2019 CSLP catalog. If you do not receive your packet, please contact us at, 512-463-5465 or 800-252-9386 (toll-free for Texas).

Bethany Wilson, Taz Yilma, and Meisa Parkinson put together CSLP Summer Reading mailers for Texas Libraries

Each USB drive includes:

  • 2019 CSLP manuals and artwork for the early literacy, children, teens, and adult programs.
  • A catalog for the 2019 CSLP artwork and program incentives.

When you receive your packet, download the manuals and store your USB drive in a safe place. The manuals may be downloaded to all computers in the branch or location to which they are shipped. In accordance with the revised CSLP Rules of Use, manuals may not be uploaded onto library intranets or shared with other branches or locations.

If your library’s computer does not have a USB drive, please let us know. We also ordered DVDs for libraries that need them. Libraries wishing to order DVDs or additional USB drives may purchase them directly from the CSLP at for $10 each. Libraries may also purchase printed program manuals for $20 plus shipping directly from the CSLP. A DVD containing the graphics will also be included.

FREE 2019 Summer Reading Program Supplies Available Until Friday, Nov 16!

Texas public libraries may now order free 2019 CSLP posters, bookmarks, reading logs and certificates provided by TSLAC. The online order form is available at:

The deadline for submitting orders for free materials is Nov. 16, 2018.

The slogan for the 2019 CSLP early literacy, children’s, teen, adult and all-ages programs is “A Universe of Stories/Un Universo De Historias.” The theme is outer space, and unique artwork has been created for each age group. You may view the 2019 CSLP artwork, including the posters, certificates, bookmarks, and reading logs, at or in the print catalog that you will receive in the packet with your USB drive.

Take Summer Reading to the Streets: Partnering to Reach Children with Barriers to Library Access

We just added an exciting new webinar to our fall roster that might interest all of you! Librarians at the Cedar Rapids Public Library in Iowa have agreed to share their success story with Summer Reading outreach in their area. I had the pleasure of hearing this presentation at the Public Library Association Conference this past year and was blown away by what they have accomplished! I knew I HAD to bring it to Texas to share with all of you. Here is a little about the program:

Take Summer Reading to the Streets: Partnering to Reach Children with Barriers to Library Access
Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018
2p.m.-3 p.m. (CST)

Too often the best library programs never reach the kids most in need. We may be from Iowa, but we know that “if you build it, they will come” isn’t always true. So we found a way to go to them. Discover how the Cedar Rapids (IA) Public Library moved beyond its walls to reach children with barriers to traditional library access through strategic partnerships and volunteer support. Adapt this award-winning program to fit your community.

At the end of this webinar, participants will:

  • Identify organizations to build partnerships with that meet specific criteria: mission alignment, target audience, poverty mapping, food deserts, school proficiency scores, and free and reduced lunch program participation rates.
  • Build a framework for adapting onsite library resources to take outside of the library: collection management, volunteers, activities, crafts, requested materials, and tracking systems.
  • Develop volunteer duties to assist library staff in efficiently and economically implementing outreach.
