Circulating Kindles in a School Library

2010 November 17
by Katherine Adelberg

Buffy Hamilton, a media specialist/teacher-librarian at Creekview High School in Canton, Georgia, has been blogging about her efforts to circulate Kindle eReaders at her library.  During our recent discussions during Small Library Management: Helping Patrons with Technology trainings, we have seen that there is a lot of interest out there regarding how such a system might work.

To view all of the updates on this effort, view the Unquiet Librarian blog at http://theunquietlibrarian.wordpress.com/, released under a Creative Commons license.  If you don’t want to scroll through the entire blog, here are links and descriptions of some of the highlights:

The entry on November 9, titled The Arrival of Our New Kindles and Procedures for Cataloging the Kindles and Kindle eBooks, provides a YouTube Video and SlideShare document explaining the procedures of first setting up the Kindles for circulation use.

The entry on November 12, titled Video: Reflections on the Initial Process of Preparing Kindles for Circulation at The Unquiet Library, offers a YouTube video providing more detail on the checkout process.

The entry on November 16, titled Video: Kindle in the Library—Refining Our Organizational Procedures with Forms, provides a YouTube Video and SlideShare document explaining more about their organizational procedures regarding the Kindles.

These are great videos and resources for anyone wondering how an eReader checkout system might work!

Do you have a way of storing the Kindles in a container before they are checked out?

This is perhaps a question best answered by Buffy Hamilton (mentioned in the blog post) – you can contact her at buffy.hamilton@gmail.com. Thanks!

I was curious how you synced the kindles. We have just purchased two kindle fires and I’d like to try to sync them identically and I was curious if that was what you did with your kindles. Or did you just load certain books on certain kindles.

Thank you very much for your help with these youtubevideos. This was very helpful.

Hi Hannah. The Unquiet Librarian would likely be glad to answer more specific questions on the Kindles if you email her directly. Here’s her blog: http://theunquietlibrarian.wordpress.com/. Good luck!

    Thanks, Dawn
