DISCOVERY TEXAS:

Discovery Texas at LibraryofTexas.org is a federated discovery searching service offered by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission to allow users of TexShare member libraries to easily discover and retrieve information from multiple library catalogs, databases, and other knowledge collections without having to use each individual library's interface. Currently Discovery Texas searches through more than 150 TexShare member library catalogs, and licensed content from EBSCO and Gale.

Providing Access to Discovery Texas

Visit Discovery Texas at LibraryofTexas.org. Libraries with registered their IP addresses can immediately connect to this URL and begin searching. For non-IP-authenticated libraries and patrons at home there are other ways to connect.

  • Login with your library's TexShare login ID and password. Your patrons may also use this service from home or work using your library's TexShare login ID and password.

  • If your library can authenticate patrons with your automation system, add a link to Discovery Texas to your website's menu of licensed resources. You can route authenticated patrons to Discovery Texas by way of proxy server or a scripted success-URL.

  • Another option for libraries that can authenticate patrons locally is to create a Discovery Texas search widget. See our widgets page for several examples of how to do this using only HTML code.

Adding Your Library

Any TexShare member library is eligible to add its catalog to the Discovery Texas search. The State Library has contracted with a strategic partner, the Houston Area Library Automation Network (HALAN), to assist libraries wishing to add their catalogs to the Discovery Texas list of search targets.

Requirements:

1. Your automated library system must include a Z39.50 server that is running, compliant with the Bath profile, and accessible through the Internet from the State Library. You must inform TSLAC staff of the host name, port number, and database name for your Z39.50 server.

2. You must give the State Library permission to list your collection in Discovery Texas interface. You may also want to give the State Library permission to share your MARC records with other libraries. A form for this purpose is available here. It must be signed and mailed or faxed to TSLAC before your collection can be added.

4. If your library subscribes to additional databases beyond the TexShare core subscriptions, you may be able to make those resources available to your patrons thorugh Discovery Texas
