if the Articles were there. [T]his
old woman said they were

you may know the likeness
was considered good.) Sure
enough he found his
own portrait unfinished
and with those same
torn places in the canvas[.]
[M]y Mothers he never
found[,] much to our
regret. As to the Artists
idea in the background
I can not say but is it not
suggestive of "Smoke of battle"
etc.! About the varnish-
I hardly know what to say
but I believe I would rather
you would not or at least
use very little of it.
