truth historically of my representations.

            Yet I look for the inevitable adverse

criticism; especially in our Texas Capitol

where hangs a so-called "Surrender of Santa

Anna to Genl Houston" (a misnomer as

you know) (1) and in which the uniforms of

the Mexican soldiers are unlike those painted

in my battle picture, and as Texas purchas-

ed the "Surrender" picture, many will doubt-

less accept as a truthful representation in

every [all] particulars.

The Enclosed description of

uniforms is by Capt. R. M. Potter of the U.S.

Army and contained in a communication

to me on the subject of the Fall of the Alamo.

            Capt. Potter was at Matamoras [sic] when

the Alamo fell, when Fannin and his men were

butchered and too, when Urrea and Filisola

passed through after the San Jacinto disaster.

and in possessing a military taste, in being

a close observer, in a familiarity with the
