in being able to verify the truth of my
representation by the statement of one, who,
Enacted as conspicious [sic] a part as yourself, in
Engagements with those same soldiers.
And possibly you would
address a brief note to the Mexican officials
which would hardly fail in securing the
official endorsement which would render
my work unassailable—at least in the matter
of uniforms.
Should I be fortunate enough
to obtain your attention and favorable con-
sideration, I shall trouble you farther with
a slight sketch of the battle-ground for the pur-
pose of having your opinion as to the prob-
able form and direction of a slight breast-
work constructed by the Mexicans on
the morning of the Engagement.
I am not insensible to how very much
I am asking from you, but am impelled
by the great value your assistance would
be in securing the sale of my work to the
State. And I feel you have enough of
