Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center to Close Temporarily for Renovations
Tuesday, November 4, 2014 • Liberty, Texas • News Release
The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center will be closed for renovations from November 3, 2014 through January 1, 2015 as part of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission’s (TSLAC) multi-year plan to address critical safety and security needs at the 127-acre museum complex in Liberty, TX.
A portion of funds awarded from a $1 million appropriation by the 83rd Texas Legislature will be used to update facilities including the removal of hazardous asbestos, installation of a state-of-the-art fire suppression and detection system, and the replacement of flooring in the reading room. Additional funds provided by TSLAC will be used to expand existing square footage and provide for increased seating options in the reading room. Plans also call for providing additional tables and computer work stations for visiting researchers.
The research library and museum serves as the official regional historical resource depository for the ten Southeast Texas counties of the historic Atascosito District (Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto and Tyler Counties). The Center houses historical records and artifacts and includes a complex containing the Jean and Price Daniel Home and Archives; and four relocated historic buildings.
" The critical repairs being made to the Center are key to the preservation of the rich history of the ten counties that we serve," said Manager Alana Inman, "The updates will not only improve safety and security, but also provide improved access to the materials and resources housed within our collection."
The remainder of the funds from the appropriation will enable the agency to make further improvements to the facility and the grounds, including the installation of exterior safety lighting and the construction of a parking area and handicap entrance for the Daniel Home.
