Sam Houston Center Re-Opens Following Renovations
Thursday, January 15, 2015 • Liberty, TX • News Release
The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center has re-opened following a series of renovations made to address critical safety and security issues at the historical resource depository in Liberty, TX. Repairs and upgrades were made possible in part by funds awarded from a $1 million appropriation by the 83rd Texas Legislature to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC).
The 127-acre historical complex was closed to the public for nearly two months while updates were made to the facilities including the replacement of flooring in the reading room and the removal of hazardous asbestos and installation of exterior safety lighting.
Supplementary funding provided by TSLAC permitted refurbishment which allowed for increased seating options in the reading room in order to make room for additional computer work stations for use by visiting patrons and researchers.
"We are pleased to reopen our doors to the people of Southeast Texas who count on the Sam Houston Center as a cornerstone of their own historical and genealogical research," said Manager Alana Inman, "The improvements to our facility not only mean an enhanced experience for our patrons, but the technological and safety improvements also allow our staff to better serve our clientele."
The complex serves as the official regional historical resource depository for the ten Southeast Texas counties of the historic Atascosito District (Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto and Tyler Counties). The Center houses historical records and artifacts and includes a complex containing the Jean and Price Daniel Home and Archives; and four relocated historic buildings.
Future improvements to the grounds, scheduled for 2015, will include the installation of a new security gate and fencing, widening and repaving of roadways and the construction of a parking area and handicap entrance for the Daniel Home.
