Sam Houston to John Linney,, 1836

Nacogdoches Sept 18th 1836

To Lenee

Chief of one village
of the Shawnees

You are allowed to raise 25
men Shawnees for 6 months as rangers between Heath's [?]
trading House and the Brazos, each one shall
recive [sic] at the rate of $10 [per] month. You
shall receive double that amount[.]

You will let the Texas rangers
know when you commence. I want you to
make your principal camp at or near the old
Tawakana village on Navasota.

The Officer who will be in
command along that frontier, will tell you
from time to time what to do.

The object in getting you and
your warriors to ranger there is to prevent the
Wild Indians from stealing Horses and

murdering
