Nancy Webb and Marilyn Martin
Our Employees of the Quarter for the Second Quarter of Fiscal Year 2005
Nancy Webb - Nancy Webb began working at TSLAC in 1995, as the Executive Secretary to former Director and Librarian, Robert Martin, now the Executive Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. In 1998, Nancy moved over to the position of Public Information Officer where she remained for three years. In 2001, Nancy took a divisional jump to Archives and Information Services, serving as a Stack Assistant until late 2003 when she accepted the position of Administrative Assistant in Library Development.
In her brief time in Library Development, Nancy has jumped in with both feet, quickly bringing new ideas and ways of organizing and becoming a highly contributing member of the division. Nancy’s primary responsibilities are assisting Wendy Clark, Lone Star Libraries manager. In this capacity, she is often the first person that librarians talk to about the loan and deals with a great deal of the paperwork.
Working with the Loan Star Libraries grant means that Nancy speaks with representatives from nearly every library in the state. These librarians can be upset over a program requirement or turning paperwork in late but Nancy always handles them with understanding, tact, and a high level of customer service skills.
“Nancy fit right in from the moment she joined the LD staff. She jumped right in and “fixed” some of our workflow issues…that’s Nancy’s style. She’s very efficient. She saw a way to make the processing of CE certificates more efficient, so she wrote it up and presented it to her supervisor. But she didn’t stop there. She’s been tweaking her workflow as she goes.”
Marilyn Martin - Marilyn Martin came to TSLAC in December of 2003, transferring to us from the former Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board. When she came to our agency, Marilyn had a great deal of knowledge about grants and accounting. What she did not know, she was eager to learn.
One of the most remarkable things about Marilyn’s tenure is that prior to becoming the Accounting and Grants Manager, she took on the functions of this position in addition to her own duties as Head Accountant…twice. This required her to spend a large amount of her own time reading up on complex state accounting manuals, including those on the Uniform Statewide Accounting System which, if it is half as scary and complicated as it sounds, is quite a feat.
Marilyn has worked with the Accounting and Grants staff to streamline their processes making them more efficient. She has also worked to make customer service a priority for the department. These efforts have not gone unrewarded. Since she began, late payments have been cut in half, with the dollar amounts of those payments cut by three-fourths.
A co-worker said of Marilyn, “While much of what she does is invisible to others in the agency, I have the unique pleasure of working with her on a daily basis as she strives for perfection. Therefore, I understand and truly appreciate her efforts…because I, too, know how complicated the USAS system is.”
