JOB SUMMARY

One year temporary position through August 31, 2016 with the possibility of extension.
P
osition will involve occasional travel and after hours and weekend work

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) informational and educational work as the Coordinator for  the Center for the Book program. The Texas Center for the Book, an affiliate of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, presents programs and activities that encourage reading and library use among people of all ages across the state.  Projects will include Letters about Literature, a writing contest about books for grades 4 to 12, and statewide observation of Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros (Day of the Child/Day of the Book) to encourage a love of reading with a special emphasis on multicultural families and books. Works in collaboration with the Director and Librarian and Communications office team to organize and present the program and activities including all related program materials and publications. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS

Plan and present events, including coordinating presenter participation, completing logistical arrangements,     inviting guests, and informing the public
Coordinate public information relating to the activities of the Center.
Promote both internally and to the general public the activities of the Center for the Book.
Assist with establishing effective presence on social media sites to inform the public of Center activities.
Assist in developing website content to inform the public of Center activities.
Performs other duties as assigned
Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies
Complies with all applicable agency policies and procedures, including safety, dress code and standards of conduct.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications or a related field
One year experience in program or event planning, public relations, communications, or related work

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and prescribed procedures and practices.
Ability to operate within budget constraints.
Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and coordinate multiple projects.
Ability to maintain constant attention to detail with complete accuracy.
Ability to communicate effectively with agency staff at all levels, print and broadcast media, service providers, business contacts, and the general public.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in media relations.
Public speaking or speech writing experience.
Familiarity with current trends in publishing, books, authors and related matters.
Experience with fundraising or marketing, especially with nonprofit organizations.
Experience in exposition design, planning and construction.
Ability to plan and initiate projects, meet deadlines and sustain quantity and quality of work without detailed instructions or close supervision.
Knowledge of libraries or library science.

No supervisory responsibility. Reports to the Director and Librarian
