Small Library Management Program
What is the Small Library Management Program?
The Small Library Management Training Program (SLM), now over 20 years young, is an ongoing educational program to provide management and foundational library skills to those without Master's degrees in Library Science who work in small community (25,000 or less population) libraries in Texas.
SLM is intended to provide intensive training for small community library managers and staff in the areas of administration, management, policy development, collection development, reference services and technology planning.By attending these sessions, participants:
- Benefit from enhanced leadership skills
- Are empowered with a sense of authority and professionalism
- Gain the expertise needed to revise and create policies and procedures
- Gain a greater understanding of their roles as information professionals
- Become part of a support network of professional colleagues
Training Needed to Complete the Program
SLM consists of four required core components:
- Leadership and Management Essentials
- Collection Development
Each component includes some options for taking portions of the required training online, so you can have your training right when you need it. The Leadership and Management Essentials component, because it offers library staff an opportunity to network, requires at least 2 days of in-person attendance at a workshop.
And, once you have completed the core SLM program, you can continue to enhance your knowledge with SLM Advanced workshops and courses. For interested library staff, we regularly offer workshops or coursework for variety of topics not covered by the core SLM program.
SLM workshops are made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act.

Small Library Management now has a Facebook group! To join the Small Library Management (SLM) program Facebook group, sign into Facebook and search for the “Small Library Management Program (Texas)” group and request to join. You can also access by going here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/slmtx/. In this group, members will be able to get SLM news, ask their colleagues for professional insight, and network in a digital area. Those who join this Facebook group should have a clear connection to Texas libraries (i.e. work in a Texas library, attend library school, etc.).

Financial Assistance for Travel to SLM Workshops
Continuing a tradition established in 1995, the Tocker Foundation accepts applications for financial assistance to offset travel costs (hotel, mileage, etc.) for Texas libraries whose service population is 12,000 or less. Visit the Foundation's Librarian Travel Stipends page for more information.
Completed forms should be submitted at least 10 days before date of the workshop you wish to attend.
