TSLAC’s Government Information Analysts are available to travel across the state to provide records management training to state agencies and local governments. By partnering with records managers across Texas, we are able to offer 1/2 day (3 hr course), 1-day, or 2-day regional workshops on a variety of relevant records management topics.
Our training calendar can fill up quickly. If you are interested in setting up a workshop, we recommend that you contact us at least 3-6 months in advance.
To discuss options, please contact RMA Unit Manager Sarah Jacobson at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 512-463-5449.
What topics are covered in a regional training workshop?
The topics covered in our workshops can be tailored to meet your needs. Hosting a workshop enables you to choose the training classes that your area needs the most — managing email, emergency preparedness, an introduction to records management for new elected officials, and several others. Our core classes include presentations and hands-on activities in the following subject areas:
Introduction to Records Management for Local Governments
Learn why records management is important and required, what constitutes a record, how to ensure you are in compliance and how that benefits your organization, ways to ensure you have an active and continuing program, tips on outsourcing and valuable resources for you and your records management program. (3.5 hours)
State Records Retention Basics (STATE AGENCIES ONLY)
This course explains the basic laws pertaining to records management in state agencies. Topics covered include: records retention schedule rules, standards and procedures for microfilming and electronic records, and how to prepare a records retention schedule. (3.5 hours)
Managing Electronic Records
This course looks at the definition of electronic records, applicable laws and rules with corresponding best practices, how you can best manage such records, recommended standards and procedures, and where these records may be located in your organization. It also discusses e-mail, digital imaging, and social media, and how to address the various challenges of these commonly-used types of e-records and best manage them. (3 hours)
Emergency Preparedness for Government Records
Learn how to identify, protect, and ensure access to your essential records, the records necessary to continue operations in the event of an emergency. The course will also cover how to prepare, respond to, and recover from a records emergency. (3.0 hours)
