On the Road: Baytown

Okay, we know we’re not supposed to have fun at work, but we just couldn’t help ourselves in Baytown. Erinn Barefield and Angela Ossar traveled to Baytown, TX (east of Houston) for a one-day records management workshop on June 17th. We were treated to dinner with City Clerk Leticia (Lettie) Garza and Records Specialist Omega Jones the night before the workshop, and we honestly cannot remember laughing that much in recent memory.

Baytown Community Center, venue for the training event on June 17th. We love their gorgeous pine trees!

Participants included about 50 local government officials from Baytown and surrounding municipalities, counties, and school districts.  Attendees learned about the basics of records management compliance, improving filing systems, and managing e-records.

Immediately following our training, Baytown’s Records Specialist, Omega Jones, provided training to City of Baytown employees on specific procedures for things like coordinating disposition and transferring records to storage.  We found this to be quite complementary to the training we were providing — our training covered state laws, best practices, and general tips, and then Omega’s session focused on putting those pieces together in Baytown. We would definitely recommend this approach for any future off-site training events.

We sincerely thank Omega and Leticia for organizing this training event and for their exceptional hospitality.
