Building Local Government Collections
This webinar – hosted by the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators (NAGARA) – will detail the process of archival review and appraisal of records created by a government entity and those donated by the public.
Date & Time: Thursday, May 2, 2019 | 1PM – 2PM EST
Overview: Local government records on short legal retention could have the potential to frame permanent records in the context of their creation and thus merit preservation. Building a historical narrative can also be achieved by soliciting materials from the public, broadening the viewpoint of municipal events or projects.
This webinar will detail the process of archival review and appraisal of records created by a government entity and those donated by the public. The webinar will address how one county records repository deals with the developing and the implementation of collecting government records and the records that help better frame the story of these collections. Attendees will learn more about the following
- Setting up your mission and purpose;
- Setting up your collection development policy;
- How to implement – to solicit the public or not?;
- Indexing and appraisal – how to get newly collected collections to the public.
Duration: 45-60 minutes
