While we unfortunately can\u2019t absolve a local government of responsibility for retaining records, we\u2019re happy to provide guidance on best practices for your next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Document the damage as much as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Salvage damaged records if possible and economical.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prioritize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsl.texas.gov\/slrm\/blog\/2017\/01\/identifying-and-protecting-essential-records\/\">essential<\/a> and permanent records.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;\">Be mindful of resources\u2014recovery can be expensive and it\u2019s not always the best choice.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you do plan to salvage records, time is of the essence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work with your leadership to identify priority records and secure resources if needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t panic! Your government will need to balance cost, importance, and whether records can be salvaged.
