Free Online Courses for State Agency Records Managers

The State and Local Records Management Division offers all records managers the opportunity to take self-paced, online courses on a variety of records management topics through our Online Training site. Many of our offerings are archived webinars on topics ranging from digital preservation to managing email to disaster recovery, but we also offer several full-fledged courses on introductory topics.

Available Courses

Our online course offerings for state agencies currently include:

State Records Retention Basics

This course explains the basic laws pertaining to records management in state agencies. Topics covered include: records retention schedule rules, standards and procedures for microfilming and electronic records, and how to prepare a records retention schedule. (CE Hours: 3.0)

Managing Electronic Records

This course looks at the definition of electronic records (e-records), applicable laws and rules with corresponding best practices, how you can best manage such records, recommended standards and procedures, and where these records may be located in your organization. It also discusses e-mail, digital imaging, and social media and how to address the various challenges of these commonly-used types of e-records and best manage them. (CE Hours: 3.0)

Emergency Preparedness for Government Records

Learn how to identify, protect, and ensure access to your vital records: the records necessary to continue operations in the event of an emergency. The course will also cover how to prepare, respond to, and recover from a records emergency. (CE Hours: 3.0)

Improving Filing Systems

This course explains how to improve your filing systems: definitions, types of filing arrangements, common filing issues and solutions to these problems, and a 6-step filing program and action plan to begin addressing your agency's filing needs. (CE Hours: 2.0)

Forms Management

The basics of forms management: definitions, establishing a forms management program, conducting a forms analysis, forms design standards, and electronic forms. (CE Hours: 2.0)

How Can I Start Taking Courses through TSLAC’s Online Training Site?

If you don't have already have one, create an account on our Online Training site by clicking "create new account" under the login area. After you submit your account registration form, you'll receive an automatic email and will need to confirm your account by clicking on the link in the email message.

Once logged in to the site:

  • If you are not currently enrolled in any courses and/or if it is your first time to log in to our site, you will see our complete course catalog (arranged by category) displayed on your login page. Click the icon to view course descriptions and/or click the course title to visit the course home page and learn more about the course. If you decide you'd like to take a course, click the "Enroll me in this course" link located on the far left side of the course home page. Once enrolled, work your way through the course from the top down.
  • If you are currently enrolled in a course or courses, their course titles will display on your login page. Click the course titles to gain access to your courses. To browse the rest of our course catalog, click the "all courses" link located at either the far left or bottom of your login page. Follow the same instructions mentioned previously to learn about and/or enroll in additional courses.

Note: Many of our courses offer guest access -- the ability to access course content without having to enroll (or even have an official account) on our Online Training site. However, if you would like to be able to print an official Certificate of Completion, you will need an official account AND you will need to enroll in the course BEFORE you begin to complete any course content.
