Online Patron Access Catalog (OPAC)

 

Q: What is the TBP Catalog?
A:
The Talking Book Program (TBP) Catalog is an Online Patron Access Catalog (OPAC). It contains all of the books in TBP’s collection.

Q: What can I do in the OPAC?
A:
Through the OPAC, you can search the collection, view your contact information, request list, current loans   and reading history, create book requests, delete requests, renew books on loan and email your request list, current loans and reading history to yourself.

Q: Can anyone use the OPAC?
A:
Only registered patrons of the Texas Talking Book Program  may use the catalog. There is an additional registration process for catalog access.

Q: How can I register to use the OPAC?
A:
Contact the Talking Book Program at 1-800-252-9605, and a staff member will register you. You will need to be close by your computer to receive your temporary password email. The temporary password is only active for 30 minutes, so you’ll need to act quickly to complete your registration. Once you’ve received your temporary password, you’ll need to create a new password. Passwords must be 16 characters (letters or numbers) long, but there are no other special requirements.

Q: How do I log in? Which library ID do I choose?
A:
Follow these steps:

  • Click on the down arrow at the end of the Library ID field.
  • Select TX1A-Austin from the drop-down list.
  • Enter your Patron ID (patron number) in the Patron ID field. Your Patron ID can be found in the introductory email you were sent when you registered to use the OPAC.
  • Enter your password in the Password field. Remember that passwords are case sensitive and must be entered exactly as created.

Q: I forgot my password! How do I reset it?
A:
You can reset your password on your own using the security questions you created when you completed your registration. If you’ve forgotten the security questions as well,please contact TBP at 1-800-252-9605, and we’ll send you a new temporary password.

Q: How can I get help using the catalog?
A:
Call us! The Help section of the OPAC is outdated and contains misleading information. We are working to get this corrected, but for now, please call us at 1-800-252-9605 during our regular business hours. We can answer any questions you have or walk you through using the catalog.

Q: How can I check my contact information to make sure it’s correct?
A:
Follow these steps:

  • Hover over the My Account tab. A drop-down list will appear.
  • Choose My Profile from the drop-down list.
  • You can also reset your password and password reset questions and answers from this screen.

Q: My contact information has changed. How can I update it in the OPAC?
A:
To update your address, phone number or other information, please contact TBP Reader Services at 1-800-252-9605, or email us using the handy email link on the left side of the screen framing the OPAC.

Q: I want to change my automatic selection settings, enroll in the Duplication on Demand program or make other account changes. How can I do that?

Q: How can I search for books?
A:
The first screen you see after logging in will be the Catalog Search screen.
Before creating a search, check the Optional Search Criteria section to make sure that the right media format(s), language(s), narrator accent(s), notable content (sex, violence, language, etc.) and book statuses are applied. Failing to check this may result in finding books that don’t fit your preferences.
Do NOT search for Cassettes. Although these books are listed in the catalog, they are not available for loan and are being phased out. Most titles are available as Digital Books. If you need assistance with a cassette title, please contact Reader Services at 1-800-252-9605, or email us using the handy email link on the left side of the screen framing the OPAC.
Most of the search fields will show a drop-down list when you enter information in them. Select the appropriate item from the drop-down list.
If your search doesn’t give you the desired results, click the Reset Search link at the top right of the screen to start over.

Q: What are the different search fields, and how do I use them?
A:
The search fields include the following:

  • Title search field: Leave out articles such as “a” and “the” at the beginning of a title. For example, if searching for The Bell Jar, enter “Bell Jar.” Including articles like “the” or “a” at the beginning of a title will prevent you from finding the title you need. A drop-down list will appear; choose your title from the list.
  • Author search field: Start with the author’s last name, followed by a comma, then the first name. A drop-down list will appear; choose your author from the list.
  • Narrator search field: Start with the narrator’s last name, followed by a comma, then the first name. A drop-down list will appear; choose your narrator from the list.
  • Annotation search field: Use this field with caution! Entering any word in the annotation field will bring up a list of ALL book annotations containing the word. You do not need to enter the first word in the annotation. Use words or phrases you think might be unique to the desired book’s annotation. Press the space bar after entering your word or phrase.
  • Book ID search field: Use this field if you know the book number. You must enter the entire book ID (letters and numerals) to get a result. This field doesn’t have a drop-down list.
  • Series search field: Leave out articles (a, the, etc.) at the beginning of the series title. You must start with the first word in the series title to find the series.
  • Subject search field: This field finds books that have specific terms describing them. It provides a drop-down list of subjects starting with the term you enter.
  • Comprehension search field: Comprehension is the reading level of the book (juvenile, adult or young adult.) Choose the reading level from the drop-down list to find all books with that comprehension level.

Q: How do I get more information about books that appear on my lists or on a list of search results?
A:
For full details and description of a book, click on the book’s title. This will take you to a Book Details screen that contains more information about the book, including the annotation, narrator, subject categories and notable content. You can request the book from this screen using the Request Book button at the top right of the screen.

Q: What does the alphabetic part of the book number mean?
A:
The letters at the start of the book number indicate the format (digital, Braille, large print, etc.) Although there are many different letter codes, here are some basic rules:

  • Digital book numbers all start with the letter D.
  • Braille book numbers all start with the letter B.
  • Large Print book numbers all start with the letter L.
  • Cassette book numbers all start with the letters R or C. (Remember, the majority of cassettes are no longer available for loan.)

  • Hover over the My Account tab. A drop-down list will appear.
  • Choose My Books from the drop-down list.
  • Click on the Current Books tab on the My Books page.

Q: How do I renew a book loan?
A:
Follow these steps:

  • Hover over the My Account tab. A drop-down list will appear.
  • Choose My Books from the drop-down list.
  • Click on the Current Books tab on the My Books page.
  • Click on the Renew link next to the book.

Q: How do I view the list of books I have read in the past (reading history)?
A:
Follow these steps:

  • Hover over the My Account tab. A drop-down list will appear.
  • Choose My Books from the drop-down list.
  • Click on the History of Books tab on the My Books page.

Q: How do I view my list of book requests?
A:
Follow these steps:

  • Hover over the My Account tab. A drop-down list will appear.
  • Choose My Books from the drop-down list.
  • Click on the Book Requests tab on the My Books page.

Q: How do I add a request for a book?
A:
Follow these steps:

  • Search for the desired book using the Catalog Search screen.
  • Your search will bring up a list of results that shows the Book ID, Title, Author, Location and Action.
  • Under the Action column, you will find a button labeled Request [book number].
  • Click on the Request button next to the book you would like to read.

Q: How do I delete a request for a book?
A:
Follow these steps:

  • Hover over the My Account tab. A drop-down list will appear.
  • Choose My Books from the drop-down list.
  • Click on the Book Requests tab on the My Books page.
  • Click on the Remove [book ID] button to the right of the request you want to delete.
  • A dialog box will pop up confirming that you have removed the request. Click Okay to continue.

Q: How do I see what machine/s I have checked out?
A:
Follow these steps:

  • Hover over the My Account tab. A drop-down list will appear.
  • Choose My Machines from the drop-down list.
  • This screen will show you the machines you currently have on loan, machines you checked out in the past and any outstanding machine requests.
  • You can email a list of the machines you have or have had to yourself using the button labeled E-Mail Machine Lists.
  • Readers may only borrow ONE playback machine for each format.

The Talking Book Program’s services are currently available via voicemail and email. Books and machines are being shipped, and new patron applications are being processed.

Although we are not taking calls directly, we are able to respond to voicemail messages promptly. To reach us through the call center, please call, 1-800-252-9605, and leave a detailed message with your request.  We will return your call if needed. Please do not leave multiple messages with the same request.
