During the next few weeks I’ll be posting about new books and DVD’s that have arrived for the Disability Information & Referral Center (DIRC).
The first two are both for students. College Success for Students with Physical Disabilities and College Success for Students with Learning Disabilities are designed to assist teenagers who will soon be graduating from high school and want to attend college.
The learning disabilities book is geared toward individuals with dyslexia, ADHD, Asperger’s, and other learning differences. Topics include how to choose a college, advice on academics, self-advocacy, and how to adapt to life in college.
The physical disabilities book includes chapters on the college search, planning for success, and how to find and train personal care attendants. The physical disabilities book also features a listing of “America’s Most Disability-Friendly Colleges”
Both books offer a wealth of information for students with disabilities transitioning to college: from web sites, key laws, checklists, and sample forms, to practical advice from young people who have been through the process and want to share both their struggles and successes.
Reference Center books are available on loan for a period of five weeks. The borrower is responsible for the return postage by fourth class mail. Please call 800-252-9605, toll free in Texas, or email tbp.services@tsl.texas.gov, if you would like to check out these or other books from the DIRC. Please note that these books are not available in audio, Braille, or large print formats from TBP.
