VFO and the American Foundation for the Blind Center on Vision Loss in Dallas are partnering to provide a two day training on ZoomText. This training is available for both visually impaired and sighted individuals, but space is limited. Here are the details:

1) The seminar entitled: Balance: Getting Back to Basics has been re-scheduled.

2) The Balance Intervention Study has also been re-scheduled

This study consists of a 12 week training program designed for individuals who are 55 years or older and have vision loss. Study participants will have access to balance equipment and Tai Chi classes. Pre and post tests will be conducted.

3) Free self-defense class for the visually-impaired community
Date: Friday, April 28th
Time: 10 am
Location: Grand Room, Sedona Village Senior Living, 2800 Sedona Ranch Drive in Fort Worth

The Color of Blind exhibit at the San Antonio’s Plaza De Armas Gallery

The Color of Blind is an interactive art show by Trina Geurra Bacon and Katherine Brown. First debuting in 2013, “The show allows visually impaired individuals, along with others with special sensory needs or challenges, to better connect with art,” explains Bacon. The exhibit showcases artwork designed especially to evoke smell, touch and taste. “Everyone should be able to fully experience art. We say ‘Yes- please touch the art!’” The Color of Blind is free and open to the public.

Low Vision Seminar in Dallas on February 25th

The Foundation Fighting Blindness is hosting a free seminar for persons interested in learning about age-related Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa, and related disorders. Seating is limited. A continental breakfast will be provided. In addition to sessions, vendors will be available to promote low vision services and products.

New Low Vision Store: 4 Low Vision

4 Low Vision is a new store that will have its grand opening on Friday, July 15th. The store is part of the American Foundation for the Blind’s Center on Vision Loss. The store will sell items such as portable and desktop video magnifiers, clocks, and kitchen and medical items. Low Vision Events in Houston in July 2016

There will be two low vision events in Houston in July 2016:

Low Vision Education Day

Friday, July 8th, from 9 a.m.-noon.

Center for Visual Rehabilitation, Raye and Ed White Conference Center, at 6400 Fannin St, 19th Floor.

This expo will include sessions and a vendor area to learn about products and services for the low vision community. The event is free. The program will not begin until 9 a.m., so individuals who arrive early will be asked to wait downstairs.

Houston Area Insight Expo

Saturday, July 30th, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Health and Biomedical Sciences Building at the University of Houston main campus, 4811 Calhoun Road, Entrance 2A

The fifth annual Houston Area Insight Expo was originally scheduled for April 30th, but had to be canceled at the last minute due to historic flooding in Houston and surrounding areas. The expo will also feature workshops and a vendor area for attendees to learn about community resources. In addition, breakfast will be provided. Attendees who registered for the first event do not need to re-register. The cost is $5 for individuals who register before July 15th, and $10 for those register after July 15th.

Houston Area Insight Expo

5th Annual Insight Expo

A Wireless Independence Now training workshop will occur in the Dallas area on Wednesday, October 14th, from 8:30 – 10:00 am.

The presentation will cover the accessibility features of Apple and Android phones and tablets.
