New Offer for TexShare/SCELC Partners – Get It Now! Service from Copyright Clearance Center (Order Forms Due Dec. 16, 2011), Webinar Nov. 16, 2011

TexShare announces SCELC’s offer for the Get It Now! service from the Copyright Clearance Center. This offer will allow institutions to augment their ILL operation by providing immediate, 24/7 purchase and delivery for unsubscribed journal content from several publishers – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – through a cost-effective, and easy-to-use application integrated into your ILL workflow and/or OpenURL Link Resolver.

Note that to participate in this offer your institution will need to have completed the TexShare/SCELC Partnership documentation found here: (Your institution will need to fill out this documentation once, not each time you license something through the TexShare/SCELC Partner Program.)

By implementing Get It Now! you:

  • Deliver timely access to content – Get It Now delivers high-quality, full-color PDFs of unsubscribed journal content to patrons.
  • Increase operational efficiencies – Traditional ILL borrowing often results in unnecessary expense and wasted effort when articles arrive long after the patron needs them. Get It Now satisfies the time-sensitive needs of patrons, helps libraries save time and money, and adds greater value to the institution’s library services.
  • Streamline the ordering and invoicing process – Instead of requiring users to navigate between multiple publisher websites, each with different access, payment and invoice methods, Get It Now fulfills content requests through a single centralized service.
  • Control how the service is accessed – Get It Now can be configured in two ways: The mediated option which lets you keep access to Get It Now behind the library desk, or the unmediated option which lets you make the service available to patrons on your library’s website.

The Get It Now! service offers two deployment options:

Patron-driven unmediated model
The unmediated model is the fastest article delivery method short of subscribing to the journal.

  • The patron searches library holdings for a journal article.
  • If the full-text of the desired journal article is not available, the patron sees the Get It Now service link to request the article. The Get It Now link is configured in advance via the library’s OpenURL link resolver.
  • Depending on how Get It Now is configured, the patron either will see an order confirmation and pay no fee, or be required to pay a user fee to the institution via PayPal.
  • The full PDF of the requested journal article is e-mailed directly to the patron with a copy going to the ILL librarian.
  • The library is invoiced monthly by SCELC.

ILL librarian-mediated model

  • The patron searches library holdings for a journal article.
  • If the full-text of the desired journal article is not available, the patron requests the article using library’s standard ILL request form.
  • The ILL librarian accesses the Get It Now service link via OpenURL Link Resolver or within ILLiad through the Get It Now Add-on.
  • After placing the order, the full PDF of the requested journal article is e-mailed directly to the patron within 5 minutes, with a copy going to the ILL librarian.
  • The library is invoiced monthly by SCELC.

The Get It Now! service costs $24 per downloaded article, a price that is generally less than ILL costs or direct purchases of articles for the participating publishers. SCELC will manage the accounts of its participants in this service, and each month will send an invoice to your institution for the articles your institution purchased during the previous month. Therefore, participants in this service will pay no up front costs to participate, and will only receive invoices for articles downloaded by their institutions. SCELC will not be charging a surcharge or a partner transaction fee for this service.

Note, too, that your institution can set up a cap on the number of articles downloaded each month from your institution. By implementing a cap your library can exercise greater budgetary predictability and control with this service.

A special webinar has been planned for TexShare and SCELC institutions that can answer any of the questions you may have about this new service. Information about the webinar follows:
