OCLC Updates Open WorldCat Deep Linking Tutorial

OCLC has announced the updating of a tutorial that describes how libraries can establish deep links to their catalogs with information for the Endeavor Voyager system and additional details for several other library systems. Access the updated tutorial at http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/open/deeplinking/openworldcat_deeplinking.pdf.

Deep linking enables Open WorldCat users to link from search results in Yahoo!, Google, or other partner sites to the Find in a Library interface, then directly to the item’s record in a library’s online catalog. If the library has not initiated deep linking, Open WorldCat users may not find the exact record in the library’s catalog that matches the item identified in a web resource. Links established through the FirstSearch administrative module are also active within many FirstSearch databases, enabling users to link from records in those databases to matching records in the library’s catalog.

OCLC will continue to update this linking resource as additional information becomes available. OCLC asks that libraries assist in this effort by forwarding links to library catalogs not currently included in the tutorial or providing examples of variations of working links in the tutorial to openworldcat@oclc.org so OCLC can share them with others.
