Sir
I have the honor of communica
ting to your Excellency a brief account of a general engage=
ment with the army of Santa Anna at this place on the 21st Inst-
Our army under the command of General Houston arrived here
on the 20th Inst The enemy a few miles off at New Washington appri
sed of our arrival committed some depredation upo[n] private
property and commenced their line of march to this point
they were unconscious of our approach until our Standard
was planted on the Banks of the San Jacinto, Our position was
a favorable one for battle, On the noon of the 20th the appear
=ance of the foe was hailed by our soldiers with enthusiasm
The enemy marched in good order took a position in front
of our encampment on an eminence with in cannon shot, where
they planted their only piece of artillery, a brass nine
pounder, and then arranged their cavalry and infantry
a short distance on the right under the shelter of a skirt
of woods, In a short time they commenced fireing upon us
their cannon in front, their infantry on our left, and their
