They compile their list by requesting staffers and trusted critics nominate their favorite books of the year. Then, the editors and producers at NPR Books sit down and select their favorites. 

The books on the list fall within a variety of genres such as biographies, book club ideas, and nonfiction as well as the more traditional categories like mysteries and thrillers, and historical fiction.

2025 Texas Writer Award – Dr. Peniel Joseph

Austin-based historian, educator, and author, Dr. Peniel Joseph has been named the 2025 Texas Writer Award recipient. The award honors a writer who has made outstanding contributions to Texas literature. Dr. Joseph will be honored with a custom pair of handmade boots from renowned El Paso-based bootmaker, Rocketbuster, during a special Festival Weekend ceremony.
