Across the country, libraries are evolving beyond books and quiet study spaces to become centers of innovation and creativity. Maker spaces, equipped with tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, recording studios, and design software are giving patrons the chance to experiment, build, and bring ideas to life. These spaces lower the barrier to entry for technology that might otherwise be inaccessible, allowing people of all ages to learn by doing. For libraries, offering a maker space means more than just providing tools, it’s about inspiring lifelong learning, supporting entrepreneurship, and fostering creative confidence in their communities.
In Austin, creativity runs deep. Known for its music, art, and tech innovation, the city’s culture of making and experimenting finds a natural home in the Austin Public Library’s Innovation Lab at the Central Library. Here, patrons can produce music tracks, record podcasts, design digital art, and even create 3D-printed sculptures. It’s a space that invites imagination to meet technology, where creative minds can collaborate or explore solo projects that reflect Austin’s unique energy. And with emerging technologies like AI on the horizon, the Innovation Lab is poised to offer even more ways for patrons to create and share their work with the world.
A Digital Makerspace Built for Access and Experimentation
The Innovate Digital Makerspace, located inside Austin Public Library’s Central Library and opened in 2023, was designed to remove barriers to creative production. The space is fully equipped with hardware and software that would otherwise come at a high cost to individuals, including:
- Graphic and animation tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Blender, Cinema 4D, Krita, and GIMP
- Video editing suites including Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, Unity, Unreal Engine, and OBS
- Audio production tools like Ableton, Logic Pro, GarageBand, Reaper, and Audacity
- Professional-grade equipment including MIDI controllers, Wacom Cintiq tablets, green screens, lighting kits, and Shure studio mics
Patrons can use the Innovation Lounge without a reservation for smaller digital projects, or they can reserve the Innovation Lab, a private production room equipped with two Mac Pros for audio, video, or design sessions. Reservations are limited to two hours and are consistently booked, a sign of continuous demand for access to creative technology.
From Podcasts to 3D Prints
Patrons are using the makerspace for a wide range of projects: music and sound design, podcast recording, short films, social media, portfolio artwork, digital illustration, presentation graphics, 3D modeling, and more.
For those interested in physical output, the library offers one free 3D print submission per month per cardholder, bringing physical prototyping and design into reach for beginners, students, entrepreneurs, and hobbyists alike.
Hands-on learning is structured into the space as well. On the third Wednesday of each month, APL offers computer classes on Adobe Creative Suite and other digital tools. Additional workshops cover:
- Intro to 3D printing
- Intro to animation
- GarageBand workshops
- Ableton music production
- Coming soon — Introduction to AI
Partnerships For the Future
Austin Public Library has invested intentionally in keeping the space cutting edge, thanks in part to community partnerships. New computers in the space were acquired through support from Dell, while upcoming AI programming is being developed in partnership with Data Society, giving patrons a structured, credible entry point into AI concepts and tools.
Will Harlan, Innovation Manager at Austin Public Library, describes the mission this way:
“Innovation at the library is not about gadgets, it’s about access, opportunity, and what people can do when given the right tools. We see musicians, small business owners, students, retirees, and first-time creators using this space not just to make things, but to gain confidence, share ideas, and build new futures. Our job is to lower the barrier so the next breakthrough can start anywhere, including here.”
Upcoming AI Event: A Beginner-Friendly Starting Point
Next month, APL will host Understanding AI in partnership with Data Society—a beginner-friendly session on artificial intelligence that explains what AI is, how large language models work, environmental impacts, and how to write effective prompts. The event will be held on Sunday, November 16 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is open to all patrons.
The Innovation Lab is more than a room with equipment, it is a public launchpad for digital creativity and experimentation in a city built on ideas. With new offerings like AI literacy workshops on the way and a makerspace already operating at full demand, Austin Public Library continues to stay ahead of the curve, ensuring that emerging technology is not just observed from afar but truly accessible to the people who live here.
This is how the Innovation Lab stays true to its name: not only keeping pace with change but forging ahead at the leading edge of what’s next.
