This presentation will examine how robots can be used alongside read alouds to increase student engagement, literary connections, and comprehension skills. We’ll look at ways to use robots to represent character traits, enact dramas, demonstrate the sequence of story elements, and allow students to create their own stories and characters. With a commitment to sparking curiosity and fostering a love of reading, Melanie will share practical strategies and insights to create dynamic learning activities that allow students and patrons to create new connections through books. She’ll explores the intersection of robotics and literacy, inspiring librarians to ignite students’ interest in reading through cutting-edge approaches. Attendees will experience activities they can take and adapt for their library programs and receive a resource toolbox with ideas, guiding questions, and premade activities utilizing robots.
Presenter Bio:
Melanie Sowa-Li has been in education for 10 years. She began her journey as a 4th and 5th-grade teacher before transitioning into a Library Media Specialist role where she spent three years honing her skills in literacy and information literacy. Currently in her inaugural year as an intermediate Technology Teacher, Melanie combines her passion for education with emerging technologies to enhance student engagement.
