Austin, TX
• News Release

Austin, TX –The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) will be rolling out an enormous, 10 x 13-foot, 28-star U.S flag on Friday, July 3, in honor of Independence Day. The national flag flew for one year beginning on July 4, 1846, after Texas joined United States as the 28th state and is now part of the historic flag collection at the State Archives.

Visitors are invited to view the flag in the Reference Reading Room of the Lorenzo de Zavala Archives and Library Building from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on July 3 as part of the Texas America250 celebrations. July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence. Stop by TSLAC for this event and pick up a free flag to wave at your local July 4 parade!

Hosted at the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building, Capitol Complex, 1201 Brazos St. in Austin, this event is free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to view TSLAC’s ongoing lobby exhibit, Texas America250, as well as the original 1876 Texas Constitution, which the Lone Star State still operates under today. The constitution will only be on view through July 31, so don’t miss your chance to see the foundation of Texas government in person.

Parking is available at the Capitol Visitors Parking Garage across the street. Additional parking options, including handicapped parking, along with directions and maps, are available on TSLAC’s website at www.tsl.texas.gov/visit.

The 28-star U.S. flag was recently on display as part of an event celebrating National Flag Day on June 13.
