Description:
[Title translation:] Map of the Sierra Gorda and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico from the city of Queretero... to La Bahia de el Espiritu Santu... Covers parts of south Texas, Nuevo Santander, Coahuila, and other parts of northern Mexico. Shown are rivers, mountainous areas, towns, roads, the route of Don Joseph Escadon, and presidios. Some areas are marked off and labeled a urisdiction'. This may refer to the jurisdiction that the various schools of friars had over the missions in Mexico. There are engravings of Indians, Indian teepees, and Spanish galleons in the Gulf. The map is in Spanish. Long. 277 to 271 deg. This is a color photograph (and internegative) in the Archives' Photograph Collection, no. 1983/18-21. A color slide is also available, no. 1983/161-21. The original map is in the Archivo General de Indias, Sevilla, Espana, Mapas y Planos, Mexico, no. 162. A copy of this map, probably done at a later time, can be found in Herbert E. Bolton's Texas in the Middle Eighteenth Century, 1915, following page 302 (the original of this published map is in the Archivo General y Publico, Mexico, Historico, volume 29). The State Archives has two copies of this latter map, #1525a and #2343. 8/30/83 Revised 11/3/97
