Description:
Covers the American West west of the Mississippi River, as well as Northern Mexico, in lesser detail. Shows rivers, lakes, mountainous areas, geologic regions, natural landmarks, private and government forts, settlements, and major westward routes and trails taken by American emigrants towards the west coast during the period 1830-1870. Places or settlements not yet extant at the period in question are marked in parenthesis for orientation. Insets: 1) trails crossing the Sierra Nevada in California, 2) Gold Rush-era routes across Northern Mexico, 3) trail heads in the Omaha vicinity, and 4) the Kinney, Slate Creek, Sublette, and Dempsey-Hockaday Cutoffs.
