John Tyler proclamation, April 1844

John Tyler

President of the United States of America

To all whom the presents

shall concern—

Greeting

Know ye that I have given & granted

and do hereby give and grant to John C. Calhoun,

Secretary of State of the United States, full power & authority

& also general & special _____ to meet and confer with

Isaac Van Zandt & J. Pinckney Henderson, Ministers ac-

credited to the Government of the United States from the

Republic of Texas, being furnished with the like full powers

of & concerning the annexation of Texas to the said

United States, and to conclude a treaty upon that

subject and all others connected with it for the final

ratification of the President of the United States,

by & with the advice & consent of the Senate thereof,

if such advice & consent be given

In testimony thereof I have caused

the seal of the United States to be hereunto af-

fixed. Given under my hand at the City of

Washington, the fifth day of April eighteen hund-

red & forty four & of the Independence of

the United States the sixty-eighth.
