been in session two days & by Morse's electric

telegraph we have news up to the moment

of adjournment last evening at 7 o'clk until

9 this morning. They had adopted the "two third

rule" after a hard contest with V. Buren's

friends & had had several ballotings. Genl Cass

was twenty two vote[s] ahead of Van on

the last balloting. Cass was gaining each time

and Van falling off. Van will surely not

be nominated. I will go to the capital [sic] this

morning & give you the result before

I close this letter. I have been to the Capital &

seen the report of the telegraph. James K. Polk

is the nominee for Preisdent and Silas Wright

for V. President. Wright it is said has just decla-

red he would not accept. I do not know now what

effect Polk's nomination will have on the ques-

tion of annexation. I fear it is a weak nomi-

nation. Tho' the Texas question has prevailed so

far as to defeat Van Buren. I can probably in-

form you in a few days of the probable fate

of McDuffie's resolutions to annex &c as now

the real opinions of Senators will no longer be

surpressed by the pending question of Conen-

tional
