been in session two days & by Morse's electric
telegraph we have news up to the moment
of adjournment last evening at 7 o'clk until
9 this morning. They had adopted the "two third
rule" after a hard contest with V. Buren's
friends & had had several ballotings. Genl Cass
was twenty two vote[s] ahead of Van on
the last balloting. Cass was gaining each time
and Van falling off. Van will surely not
be nominated. I will go to the capital [sic] this
morning & give you the result before
I close this letter. I have been to the Capital &
seen the report of the telegraph. James K. Polk
is the nominee for Preisdent and Silas Wright
for V. President. Wright it is said has just decla-
red he would not accept. I do not know now what
effect Polk's nomination will have on the ques-
tion of annexation. I fear it is a weak nomi-
nation. Tho' the Texas question has prevailed so
far as to defeat Van Buren. I can probably in-
form you in a few days of the probable fate
of McDuffie's resolutions to annex &c as now
the real opinions of Senators will no longer be
surpressed by the pending question of Conen-
tional
