off the Port, to offer her every facility, upon which I hoisted
our proper colours. He was very anxious that I should anch-
or and visit the shore the next day, which I declined, and as
soon as he left filled away for the Campeche, where I was informed
Genl Anaya was. Arrived off Campeche on the 2nd August
and while standing in under our own colours, we were met
about eight miles from the land by a Schooner of War, having
on board Genl Anaya and suite, who came on board.

On being informed by the General that he had not
received the letter sent by the Zavala, and being no longer in doubt
as to the disposition of the authorities from their trusting a
vessel of War mounting five guns along-side of this vessel
and the San Bernard; and knowing that the letter was of impor-
tance, as it had been written by Genl Canalles after frequent inter-
views with His Excellency the President. I sent the San Bernard
back to Sisal with Genl Anaya’s Secretary on board for it, and
anchored. Genl Anaya remained on board until after
dark, and shewed me letters from Galveston written sixteen or
eighteen days before I left there. He came off the next day &
invited me on shore, was very anxious that I should go with
him as he had brought the Boat out expressly. I did not however
go until the next day, when I had an interview with the Govr
Elect Don Santiago Mendez whose term commenced on the 20th
inst. I was informed very frankly by him, that he disliked
to see his country cut up into small Republics, that it was
not the intention of the State of Yucatan to separate from
the other States but that she wanted to see the Federal Con-
stitution re-established, when a Convention of States would be

prepared
