confirming Burnley and Williams’ contract with
me, as Mr. Wolford’s agent, had not better give him the
option, either of taking bonds, land scrip or Treasury
notes, in payment for the boat on or before the first of
March as he may select. As Mr. Wolford is an eminent
banker in London, as well as an extensive merchant in
Manchester and Liverpool, you cannot put him on too
favourable a footing, as he means to make large invest-
ments in your Country, and will be able to render Texas
the most important financial services in Europe.
My apology without a personal
acquaintance with you for writing, must be found in the
fact of my late efforts to serve your Republic.
