My colleague Mr. Taylor
has been sick for the
last three or four days.
There is a great deal
of animosity and hard feeling
existing among the Mexicans
on the opposite side of the River
on account of these difficulties
of Cortinas. Although I am
satisfied that all these troubles
originally arose from private
or personal feuds among parties
in this County; yet they have
now grown to such an extent,
that I am afraid it will
really result in a war of
races. All the country be-
tween this place and Rio Grande
City, as Maj. Heintzelman
informs us, is actually deserted;
the ranches, all burnt or abandoned.
